While attending a conference on HIV/AIDS/Indigenous Medicine/ Indigenous Knowledge in Ghana during March 2006 and recently in Mar. 2008, I was able to share my experiences as an Herbal Practitioner with fellow practitioners. We exchanged products which were made from similar plants that grow in both Ghana and my native land, "The Virgin Islands of the United States.
I was also able to reconnect with family. Similar to Mr Alex Haley, I became the first of my family in the Western Hemisphere while attending the conference in 2006 to reconnect with family in Ghana after 300 years of separation.
Most people say,"What's in a name?" In my case, it was the sound of the name that made the connection. For what ever reason, the spelling of the name was changed. Fortunately for us the Ghana sound remained in the family. For it was the sound which caused the connection.
These are the Names which derived from the Ga name of the Sowah family of Accra Ghana: Sewer, Sutter, Sawyer, Sauer, Suarez.
Other Ga Names: Frema (Freeman), Crabb, Chinery.
